ASCENSION PARISH, La. (WAFB) - The ribbon has been cut on a major roadway widening and roundabout project in Ascension Parish.

According to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the $53.2 project involved the installation of a new roundabout at the intersection of LA 70 and LA 3125. The roundabout replaced a traffic signal.

Crews also widened LA 70 from the LA 22 interchange in Sorrento to the base of the Sunshine Bridge on the east side of the Mississippi River. In addition, a separate two-lane roadway was built that runs parallel to the existing two-lane road.

The goal of the construction work was to improve traffic flow and support any future economic development. Transportation officials said that more than 30,000 cars go through the area where the improvements
