BELLINGHAM, Mass. —

A Bellingham, Massachusetts, police officer is being credited for helping a resident escape a fire at a home early Saturday morning.

Officer Thamiris Ribeiro, who was on patrol just before 3 a.m. in the area of Blackstone and Mechanic streets, saw the fire on the second floor of the home at 1 Patrick St.

Ribeiro requested the response of the Bellingham Fire Department and took immediate action to alert and assist the sole resident, who was unaware that the home was on fire.

Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control, and there were no reported injuries.

The residence sustained significant damage, and the American Red Cross was contacted to assist the displaced resident.
