Sunderland have been warned they shouldn’t show Newcastle United too much respect in the Wear-Tyne derby or they risk ‘waving the white flag’.

The rivalry resumes after an absence of nine years in the Premier League with the two North East teams going head to head at the Stadium of Light for the first time since 2016.

An FA Cup clash between the bitter enemies two years ago whetted the appetite, but after a one-sided and comfortable 3-0 win for the Magpies on Wearside that day, Sunderland are now better equipped to take on their neighbours.

Regis Le Bris’ side head into the game in ninth spot in the table, a point and three places better off than Newcastle
