Mumbai: Ahead of Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi’s visit to Mumbai on Sunday, the city police have put in place stringent security measures, including restrictions on items allowed inside stadiums, deployment of watchtowers and crowd control arrangements, officials said.

Why is Mumbai police tightening security for Messi’s visit?

Police officials said the heightened security was necessitated by the massive public interest surrounding Messi’s visit and to prevent a repeat of the chaotic scenes witnessed in Kolkata on Saturday. During Messi’s visit there, thousands of fans protested inside the Salt Lake Stadium after failing to get a clear glimpse of the football icon despite paying high ticket prices.
