Sarah and Gerald Haynes posed for a photo with their 16-month-old daughter in front of Santa and Mrs. Claus on Saturday, eager to teach her not only Christmas traditions but those for Kwanzaa as well.

They were among hundreds of people who attended the August Wilson African American Cultural Center’s Holiday Community Day, which brings together customs associated with the two holidays.

“It makes us feel good,” said Ms. Haynes, of Ross. “Like our community sees us.”

Now in its seventh year, the gathering is not only a holiday party but a way to get people excited about celebrating their heritage and the community. It’s part of a series that includes events in the spring, summer, fall and winter.
