BUENA PARK—The South El Monte football team made plenty of history this year by capturing the school’s first section and regional titles.

But in their first state final, the Eagles were outmatched against San Francisco’s Balboa and lost, 42-8, on Saturday in the CIF Division 7-A championship game.

With one minute left in the game, a large brawl broke out on South El Monte’s sideline between players from both teams. Shortly afterward, the game was called and neither team participated in the postgame trophy ceremony.

South El Monte coach Frank Gallardo was proud of his team’s effort against one of the top teams in the San Francisco Section.
