Nine people have been killed in the horror beach attack on Bondi Beach
A senior law enforcement official has confirmed that one of the Bondi Beach gunmen was Naveed Akram from Bonnyrigg in Sydney's south-west.
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Akram's home in Bonnyrigg is currently being raided by police, ABC News Australia reported.
Footage seen earlier apparently from the Bondi Beach shooting incident in Australia showed the moment a hero bystander wrestled a gun off one of the attackers.
The bystander, wearing a white shirt, is seen crouching behind a car, as the gunman fires off shots just meters in front of him.
In between his shots, the hero rushes through the parked cars and grabs the shooter in a headlock. They wrestle for a moment before the bystander managers to pull the gun from him.
As the bystander points the weapon at the shooter, the man is seen walking away towards his alleged accomplice, who is still firing shots nearby.
New South Wales Police has confirmed that one of 10 people dead in the Bondi Beach incident is believed to be one of the attackers.
The second gunman is "critically injured", police said, with two police officers among the 11 other people injured.The fo rce said in a statement: "A police operation is ongoing after a public place shooting by two men at Bondi Beach earlier today.
"Ten people have been confirmed dead, including a man believed to be one of the shooters. The second alleged shooter is in a critical condition.
"At this time, a further 11 people are reported to be injured, two of which are police officers."
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: "The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing. Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected.
"I just have spoken to the AFP commissioner and the NSW premier. We are working with NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed. I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police."
Prime Minister Keir Starmer released a statement on X, saying: "Deeply distressing news from Australia.
"The United Kingdom sends our thoughts and condolences to everyone affected by the appalling attack in Bondi beach.
"I’m being kept updated on the developing situation."
A man who was on the phone to his family in London at the time of the Bondi Beach attack hid in his wardrobe when the shooting started.
Finn, who did not give his surname, heard gunshots from the living room of his apartment near the beach.
He told ABC News at the scene: "I just hear a few fireworks going off, that's what it sounded like anyway.
"My parents were saying 'take cover, take cover, take cover'.
"I didn't know what to do because obviously I was on my own.
"So I was just in my apartment, in my wardrobe, for the best part of I would say an hour-and-a-half, just trying to see what was going on, trying to hear.
"I was so shaken up," he added.
