Did you know that there is no such thing as darkness?
It can exist only when there is an absence of light.
Before light, there was nothing.
It is perhaps ironic that some holidays take place during the time of year when light is at its shortest supply.
Advent, the period leading up to Christmas, began on Nov. 30. Its centerpiece is the Advent wreath, which features candles representing joy, peace, love, hope, and the Christ Child.
However, Christmas lights too often detract from its true and simple meaning; that God's longing for reconciliation with his creation was such that he became part of it.
Today marks the start of Hanukkah, which commemorates a belief in the unbelievable, perseverance, and the power of light to diminish our fears.
