The deterioration of the Paul E. Werner mausoleum at Glendale Cemetery, as reported in the Beacon Journal on Nov. 2, is one more sad blow to the memory of this industrial pioneer who contributed so much to late 19th- and early 20th-century Akron.
Another is the failure to act on Progress Through Preservation of Greater Akron’s petition to name the new state Route 8 bridge the Paul E. Werner Memorial Bridge (Beacon Journal, May 5, 2023).
The Werner Publishing Co. was located on Perkins Street at the southbound exit ramp. Its production facilities were demolished some years ago. The office building at the northeast corner of Perkins and Union streets survived until it was summarily razed in early September 2020 despite being listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
