Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL injury to his left knee in the closing minutes of Sunday’s 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, the team said.

Mahomes underwent an MRI after the game that confirmed the injury, according to ESPN .

He and the Chiefs are now exploring surgical options, according to the team.

It happened on the same day the Chiefs (6-8) were eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2014.

The last fans saw of Mahomes was with a white towel draped over his head as he was getting help to get to the locker room.

Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew then threw an interception to Derwin James, capping a win for the Chargers over one of their biggest rivals.
