HARRISONBURG, Va. – Thanks to Jalynn Rogers, officials at Rye Cove need to make room for another trophy wing.

The 5-foot-8 junior crafted school Saturday by winning the high jump in the VHSL Class 1 track and field meet at James Madison University.

Displaying the vertical leap that she uses to excel on the volleyball court, Rogers won the high jump at 5-2.

“I don’t think we’ve had any state champions in girls track,” Rogers said. “I’ve been trying to do this since I started competing in the high jump as a freshman, but I never thought I would be a state champion at this point.”

Rogers credited her coach, Heather Peterson, for her emergence.

“The key today was just going out to perform like I can and see where that led me,” Rogers said.
