SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Spirit Airlines flew its inaugural flight from the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport to Newark, New Jersey Thursday.

The budget airline announced the daily, non-stop flight to and from New Jersey earlier this year.

Thursday's flight was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a cake decorated in the airline's signature yellow.

Spirit will expand its footprint in Savannah in October with non-stop roundtrip service to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Detroit, Michigan.
