EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (PIX11) — The Countdown to the annual West Indian American Day Carnival is on and Skymaxx Mas — a group that creates elaborate carnival costumes — is gearing up for its 10th year on the road.

PIX11 News got a behind the scenes look at the bright colored costumes that were dripping in gems, sequins, and eye-catching feathers at the showroom of the mas band. For Deandra Beach, leading Skymaxx goes far beyond parade day glamour. She and co-band leader Kison Ventour take on countless responsibilities to keep the band on track.

“We hold multiple roles,” Beach said. “We do design some prototypes. We also have section leaders that come in with their own designs and they’re able to join our band, and [we] organize everything as far as the costumes, the trucks.”
