BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- Labor Day in Brooklyn is a celebration of Caribbean heritage, but it also means a heavy police presence surrounding the festivities to keep violence from overshadowing the fun.

The 58th annual West Indian American Day Carnival is expected to draw over a million people, with celebrations starting long before the scheduled parade with J’Ouvert.

But for years, J'Ouvert has been linked to violence and bloodshed, taking away from tradition.

"We have thousands of officers deployed, not only on the surface level but in the skies," said Mayor Adams.

"This will be the largest deployment of the year, even bigger than our deployments for New Year's Eve in Times Square and July Fourth," said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
