DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN (PIX11) -- A new skyscraper could be coming to the ever-evolving Downtown Brooklyn neighborhood.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the public review phase of a project that could replace the existing office building at 395 Flatbush Ave. with 1,200 units of mixed-income housing.

"395 Flatbush is the latest example how an underutilized commercial building can be reborn into something the City needs—vibrant, multi-functional space that delivers on the kind of planning this moment in time requires," said Ahmed Tigani, the acting commissioner for the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

The city-led project seeks to build an 840-foot high-rise on top of the existing structure, along with a 4,750-square-foot landscaped public plaza, wider sidewalks
