FLATLANDS, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- A battle is brewing over a new kind of neighbor — large-scale lithium-ion battery storage facilities.

Promising cleaner energy and fewer blackouts, these installations are part of a growing statewide trend. But some residents said the projects pose unacceptable risks, calling them “potential bombs” being built just feet from their bedroom windows.

Within a two-block radius of Flatbush Avenue, two battery energy storage systems (BESS) are planned — one is already under construction despite mounting concerns from the community and new scrutiny from federal officials.

"Whenever you hear about these fires you can't put out, I don't know why they would put it here in a neighborhood with so many residents," said one concerned neighbor.
