HOUSTON (CW39) – The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a tropical wave in the central Atlantic that has a 40% chance of developing into a cyclone within the next seven days.

As of Friday evening, the system, currently labeled AL99, was located about halfway between Africa and the Windward Islands. Showers and thunderstorms remain disorganized, but forecasters say a short-lived tropical depression could still form in the next day or so.

The wave is expected to encounter less favorable conditions into Saturday, before possibly moving into a more favorable environment late this weekend and early next week as it approaches the Windward Islands.

The NHC gives the system a 30% chance of formation in 48 hours and a 40% chance over seven days.
