The rough surf kicked up by the passage of what was once Hurricane Erin has subsided, but authorities warn the drowning of a 17-year-old swimmer at Hampton Beach early Sunday night is a tragic reminder that the risk of rip currents remains high along New Hampshire’s coastline.
Reg flags continued to fly at lifeguard posts on Monday to alert beachgoers to the swimming hazards that began last week and continued through the weekend.
“Since Erin’s gone by the rip current warnings have been high and that’s why we’ve been flying red flags for restricted swimming,” said Patrick Murphy, chief lifeguard for the New Hampshire State Beach Patrol.
