AVON, Ala (WDHN) -- Residents in the town of Avon will head to the polls for the first time in over 20 years to vote on the next mayor.

The townspeople will be choosing between an army veteran, Jeffery Benton, a real estate agent, Evan Gardner, or a local business manager.

"There hasn't been any change in the last 6-8 years I have lived there, so that was the reason I put my name in the hat to run for mayor," said Benton.

"It's time for change, and I want to be the one to bring that change..Town officials say there hasn't been any change in over two decades due to no one being willing to run despite the public notices given until now," Gardner told WDHN.

The opening this year comes after the current mayor, Tim Prevatt, decided not to run for reelection.
