STILLWATER, Minn. — Stillwater has long been one of Minnesota's favorite getaway towns, a place known for its outdoor beauty, proximity to the St. Croix River and small town charm.

It's hard to believe the river town has never been the site of Minnesota's biggest fishing celebration, but that will soon change. On Tuesday, Governor Tim Walz announced that Stillwater will host the Governor's Fishing Opener on May 8 and 9, 2026.
