CAPITAL HILL AND JAMAICA, QUEENS — John F. Kennedy International Airport, which serves much of New York City, has been awarded more than $5.3 million for the installation of a Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS), U.S. senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced on Tuesday, Aug. 26.

The two New York Democrats have secured funding from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program and Airport Infrastructure Grant Program for 22 airports around New York state, of which JFK is receiving $5,306,260.

A GBAS strengthens the effectiveness of the existing Global Positioning System (GPS) used in U.S. airspace by providing corrections to aircraft in the vicinity of an airport. The GBAS also provides alternatives to the Instrument Landing System (ILS) supporting
