LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Federal investigators charged two people here in Louisville with taking part in a nationwide scam to steal seniors’ life savings.
One of the accused is a former Villanova basketball player.
Once chasing gold trophies, the former player is now accused of chasing gold bars.
The scam starts on someone’s phone or their computer. A message pops up warning that they’ve been hacked, and they’re connected to someone posing as tech support for Microsoft or others.
But it snowballs from there, with victims being convinced to convert their life savings into gold and transfer it for safekeeping.
The last time a local woman saw her pot of gold was in the Home Depot and Chick-fil-A parking lot on Hurstbourne Parkway in May last year.
