COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Desert Island Club, a nonprofit in Columbus’ Hilltop neighborhood, said it is facing a major financial shortfall that could force it to close.

Club managers say they need $20,000 as soon as possible to keep the lights on, the doors open, and daily meetings running.

Tucked just off Sullivant Avenue and marked by a palm tree, the club has been operating for nearly 40 years as a sober gathering space for people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.

Chairman and club manager, Michael Baldy, said the doors are open seven days a week, serving more than 35,000 people each year.

“We provide a safe environment for those released from recovery houses,” Baldy said.
