GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — It's Black Breastfeeding Week as advocates work to bring awareness to some of the barriers Black families may face while breastfeeding.

"It really was created to shine a light on the unique challenges that Black families can face when they are breastfeeding," said Priority Health Senior Director of Care Management Margaret Brown, DHA and RN. "I don't think many people are fully aware of some of the historic and cultural barriers that have existed along the way, wherein Black families will often times have a lack of representation and support."

She said breastfeeding can have health benefits for both the infant and the mother — and it's cheaper, too. But barriers can make breastfeeding more difficult for Black families.
