It was a surprise in the winter of 2006 when Providence Journal reporter Karen Davis and I found ourselves on a bus heading 1,000 miles south to Louisiana with Camp Katrina. We were reporting on a group of eight 14- and 15-year-olds, the confirmation class at Seekonk Congregational Church , just over the Rhode Island line in Massachusetts, who were making the two-day ride to New Orleans along with an assortment of family members and others to help with cleanup after Hurricane Katrina .
