SUFFOLK, Va. — Suffolk police say the eastbound lanes of Portsmouth Boulevard near Van Zandt Parkway were shut down on Wednesday following a two-vehicle crash that left one person dead.
Police said officers found that a vehicle had rear-ended a semi-truck cab. The driver of the vehicle, 53-year-old Derryl Reed of Aulander, North Carolina, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
As a result, Jason Rose, 70, of Chesapeake, has been charged with DUI/DUID vehicular manslaughter. Further charges are pending an ongoing investigation.
Detours were in place, with traffic diverted to East Washington Street, according to officials. Police said the roadway was expected to remain closed for an extended period of time, and drivers were urged to avoid the area and take alternate routes if possible.
