LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - It’s a first of its kind program within Jefferson County Public Schools that puts high school students in the sky. Juniors and seniors from the Academy at Shawnee are now spending their school days not on campus but in a hangar at Bowman Field learning about aviation.
“(It’s incredible) to see it at this level where we have students actually standing in a hanger, standing in a place where they’re actually flying planes and being able to work on developing their skills,” said JCPS superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood.
There are currently 19 students in the program, getting hands-on experience, using flight simulators, learning mechanics and even to fly themselves.
