CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WPRI) — Families across the country are stocking up for the new school year, both online and in stores.

Data from the National Retail Federation suggests that, on average, households will spend roughly $858.07 on electronics, clothing and other back-to-school essentials for K-12 students.

The NRF also estimates that back-to-school spending for K-12 students will top $39.4 billion this year, which is up from last year's $38.8 billion.

In the video above, consumer reporter Sarah Guernelli talks with a local Cumberland family about how they are preparing for the first day of school.
