DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) -- Tragic situations like the school shooting in Minnesota can cause a lot of fear and anxiety for children.
As the school year begins for many, it's important for parents to know how to navigate discussions, and be prepared for any questions kids may have.
A child psychologist with Dayton Children's says before classes begin, parents should start at home, with a conversation about safety.
"We as parents should be kind of starting that conversation and not just leaving it out there," said Dr. Laura Meyers, pediatric mental health professional.
Meyers says parents should adjust the way they speak about safety according to the age of their child.
