GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A tense standoff in Grand Island ended Wednesday evening with a 10-year-old child safe and his father in custody.

According to the Grand Island Police Department, officers were assisting the Department of Health and Human Services with the removal of a child in state custody from a home near 6th and Adams Streets. GIPD said the child’s father, Dennis Acker, refused to cooperate, barricaded himself inside the house, and threatened officers with a knife.

Police said Acker forced the child into a back bedroom, ignored repeated commands, and refused to release the child during hours of negotiations. At one point, officers reported Acker opened the front door while still armed with a knife, placing the child in further danger.
