VAN BUREN, Maine — An 8-year-old girl died Wednesday after she was struck by an ambulance while attempting to cross a road in Van Buren.

Maine State Police responded to the scene around 4 p.m., where they learned that an ambulance traveling north on Main Street apparently struck the child while she was attempting to cross the road in the area of Kennedy Terrace, the Maine Department of Public Safety said Thursday in a news release.

Ambulance personnel attempted life-saving care at the scene, but the girl did not survive.

In an update, public safety officials identified the girl who died as Emma Cormier of Van Buren.

"The ambulance was not responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash, and speed is not believed to be a factor," the news release stated.
