A 57-year-old Tortosa man is facing DUI and reckless driving charges after he was allegedly found driving the wrong way on a main road in the city Sunday afternoon. Data shows wrong-way driving happens in Maricopa more often than average.

Police responded to a call of “an erratic driver” just before 4 p.m. on Smith-Enke Road near Province Parkway, according to a probable cause statement. The caller reported witnessing a black Chevrolet Trailblazer leave the CVS parking lot , traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes, “driving over the median and swerving into incoming traffic.”

Upon finding the suspect vehicle, police boxed in the Trailblazer and pulled it over. There, officers found the driver, Arturo Escobar Torres, with bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, unsteady balance
