OHIO VALLEY (WTRF) - The Labor Day weekend has become one of the deadliest holidays of the year on the highways.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says drunk driving fatalities on this holiday have jumped 33% since 2019.

By this time tomorrow the Ohio State Highway Patrol says it'll be increasing its presence on the roads.

The patrol says people tend to start celebrating early for the three-day weekend, which is the last holiday of the summer.

We see an increase in OVI arrests and crashes that occur that are either fatal or severe injury. A misdemeanor OVI can jump to a felony especially during a crash if there's severe injuries or fatalities occur, it can jump from a misdemeanor to a felony very quickly. And then the fines go up, you're looking at prison time."
