PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- Labor Day weekend is approaching, and some officials are voicing what people should keep in mind to stay safe on the road or in the sky.

While it isn't as popular to travel for Labor Day as it is for holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas, being safe is still at the top of priorities.

"With the holiday travel, obviously, there's going to be an increased number of vehicles on the roadway," Illinois State Trooper Jayme Bufford said. "With that increased number of vehicles on the roadway, there is a higher potential for crashes."

Over Labor Day weekend last year, 1,710 seatbelt warnings and citations, 2,046 speed citations, 69 DUI arrests and 2,545 total citations were issued.
