The debate around a large piece of land in Cowichan that has been the subject of contentious conversation for almost four years is coming to a close.

On one side are people who want to save the property as farmland, and on the other are the land owners – along with Cowichan Tribes – who want to turn the area into a marsh.

After an independent review from the B.C. Agricultural Land Commission (ALC), the committee unanimously rejected a request to flood approximately 70-hectares of Cowichan Valley farmland.

The committee says that the property is capable of agricultural use and that if the land were to be flooded, the increase in saltwater in the soil would reduce the amount of food that can be grown. The decision adds that if it were to return to a marsh, it would compromise the integrit
