Allen Park — Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes said the open spot on his team’s 53-man roster is not being held open specifically for veteran edge rusher and current free agent Za’Darius Smith.
“It’s for the player that makes the most sense for us,” Holmes told reporters on Thursday morning. “Whoever that may be.”
The Lions cut three edge rushers earlier this week, leaving them with just three — Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport and Al-Quadin Muhammad — on the roster after cutdown day. Detroit added ex-Cowboys defensive end Tyrus Wheat with a waiver claim on Wednesday, but could still probably use another reinforcement. Josh Paschal and Ahmed Hassanein are set to miss significant time with injuries.
