WOONSOCKET – The City Council voted unanimously Monday to authorize city officials to open negotiations with the Narragansett Bay Commission regarding a potential transfer of the Woonsocket Wastewater Treatment Facility.

While no discussion took place, the vote marks the most concrete step yet in what city officials have described as a long-term strategy to overhaul wastewater operations. The move comes in light of what Monday’s resolution characterizes as “exceedingly large financial liabilities and the continuous expenditure of valuable city resources” tied to ongoing odor complaints and two active lawsuits related to the plant’s discharge and emissions.
