Police have been forced to sweep up thousands of empty bullet casings strewn across the road after one of its trailers accidentally opened.

Police training staff were transporting about 180kg of spent brass ammunitions, to be disposed of, when the trailer’s side door lock failed, causing the casings to spill onto a major intersection about 9.30am on Friday.

“As the vehicle and trailer turned onto Guildford Road from First Avenue in Maylands, several buckets full of the spent shell casings fell onto the road,” a police spokesperson said.

“Training staff stopped immediately and collected the spent casings.

“There was no danger at any time to members of the community, only spent casings were in the trailer being conveyed for routine disposal.”
