PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Phoenix police have detained a driver after officers said they found an “unexploded military device” inside an SUV at the Papago Park Military Reservation , which forced evacuations Thursday afternoon.
Police said the man drove the explosive device to the entrance of the military facility near 52nd Street and McDowell Road just before 4 p.m.
According to the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs , the security staff checked it out and called the police.
Officers said the device was “military grade,” but didn’t elaborate further.
The bomb squad was then called to investigate. They did some X-rays on the device to confirm what it was but police said Luke Air Force Base was better equipped to handle the situation.
The area was evacuated, but traff
