SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A dramatic chase unfolded in Springfield early on Friday as police pursued a reckless driver in a stolen vehicle.

According to the Springfield Police Department, the chase began at about 2:20 a.m. on Aug. 29 when an officer attempted to stop the suspect near Beltline Road and Gateway Street. The driver fled, leading police on a dangerous pursuit into Eugene. The vehicle, reported stolen from Salem, made a U-turn west of Coburg Road and began traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes and collided with an SPD officer on Beltline Road.

Despite the collision, the suspect continued driving the wrong way before eventually being stopped in front of Riverbend Hospital. During the arrest, a fire erupted inside the suspect's vehicle, which contained multiple gas containers ins
