CHARLESTON, S.C. - Medical University of South Carolina researchers are studying whether a common cigarette cessation drug can become a federally approved medication to help adults quit vaping.
The drug Varenicline, also known with the brand name of Chantix, is an option for smokers to quit smoking. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved drug works by blocking the effects of nicotine on the brains of smokers.
The drug is not currently federally approved to help vape and using e-cigarettes quit their use.
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released numbers on the state of nationwide vaping and electronic cigarette use in January 2025.
