MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The Arkansas National Guard is commemorating the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast.

Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana as a category 3 storm on Aug. 29, 2005.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimates the storm caused upwards of $200 billion in damages , adjusted for inflation.

The Arkansas National Guard was one of many helping hands during the tragic days that followed. It opened 59 armories in 58 counties to help register people evacuating Louisiana and Mississippi.
