A bequest made by a wealthy solicitor to build homes in his town is finally being honoured - 85 years after his death. ‌

John Richardson left written instructions that part of his estate should be used to fund six cottages in in Haddington, East Lothian, for "deserving" people. ‌

A total of £1.6M is now set to be used by East Lothian Council to build six new affordable homes as part of a new development nearly nine decades later. Mr Richardson, who was also Musselburgh town clerk, had said he wanted the 'deserving' inhabitants to live in the houses rent free, forever. ‌
