MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (KCRG) - A family in Eastern Iowa is turning pain into purpose after their father passed away.

Steven Stepanek died in May of 2023 from a form of brain cancer.

He left behind his wife, Brittney, and two children.

As they grieve his passing, his family is working toward honoring his legacy while helping others.

Each year in celebration of Steven’s birthday, the family puts together a party with all of his favorite things.

Sunday evening is the third annual Burger and Beer Benefit for Brain Cancer.

With the help of Lion’s Bridge Brewing Company, a new beer is being released in honor of Steven. It has a special message on the side from his son, written before Steve was diagnosed.
