NORTH POWNAL — The 3rd annual Witches Walk across the North Pownal Bridge over the Hoosic River is set for September 13, beginning at noon.
The event was established in commemoration of “the Widow Krieger,” an 18th century resident of Pownal who was suspected of witchcraft. She faced and survived a “trial” when she was dropped into an ice-filled Hoosic near where the bridge stands today.
Witches would float, according to the logic of those who accused her, so Margaret Krieger was pulled out when that failed to happen and lived on for many years afterward.
The event also is now dedicated as well to “other extraordinary women throughout history.”
The walk across the bridge near the town’s Strobridge Park has included numerous participants dressed as witches and other magical entities.
