A Newberry County Sheriff's Office deputy is waiting for word on whether he will need treatment for rabies exposure.
The deputy was potentially exposed while removing a coyote from private property in the Beth Eden section of the county after a citizen had shot it.
According to the sheriff's office, the coyote was displaying unusual behavior near a resident's home. The citizen had difficulty in obtaining assistance from responsible agencies, which prompted a call to the sheriff’s office.
Due to the complexity of determining rabies and the state holiday, the deputy will not know whether he needs treatment until state offices reopen Tuesday.
The sheriff's office expressed gratitude to Pet Care of Newberry for their timely assistance.
