Former Auburn football coach Gus Malzahn was the talk of weekend after helping lead Florida State to an 31-17 upset victory over Alabama .

This marked Malzahn’s sixth victory against the Crimson Tide as either an offensive coordinator or a head coach. It was also Alabama’s first loss in a season opener since 2001.

Auburn coach Hugh Freeze , who is friends with Malzahn, acknowledged his accomplishment in Monday mornings press conference.

“Yeah, there are friends in this business and then there are close friends. Gus and I are just genuine, really close friends. And who’s walked with me through a lot. And I think he’d say the same,” Freeze said. “He’s loyal. I couldn’t be happier for him. Seems like he was having fun coaching the game and doing what he’s good at.”
