MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The University of North Carolina Tar Heels football team is debuting two familiar faces against Texas Christian University.

Gio Lopez, a former quarterback at the University of South Alabama, transferred to UNC back in April. At USA, he led the Jaguars' offense to an average of 442.2 total yards per game and threw 2,557 yards in the 2024 season.

After transferring, Lopez beat out veteran Max Johnson for the position of starting quarterback. Head Coach Bill Belichick made the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
