GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - A Grand Island woman was recently scammed out of $140,000 after clicking on a link that was disguised as Microsoft Fraud Protection.
The 80 year old woman received a pop-up message claiming to be Microsoft Fraud Protection, so she called the number provided and was instructed to send money via cyber-currency, or crypto currency, like Bitcoin.
When the woman wasn’t able to make those transactions go through, the fraudster offered to fly someone in person to her doorstep to pick up the cash. The next day, someone arrived at her door and took a shoebox of cash, totaling around $140,000.
She contacted the number a few times in the following days to verify that her Microsoft account was now protected, and eventually called Grand Island police to report the possibl
