GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - A DUI hit and run investigation in Alachua County is in the early stages and state troopers said the suspect has been living in the country illegally for years.

They say 36-year-old Mariano Gomez-Mendez has been in the United States for five years on a three-month work visa.

Troopers say Gomez-Mendez ran a red light and hit another vehicle on Sunday at the intersection of Southwest 122nd Street and 8th Avenue.

Gomez-Mendez sped away and appeared to be intoxicated when he was later found.

He is being held in the Alachua County Jail.
